Types of Flat Roofing Systems
EDPM
There are many flat roofing systems, some more popular than others. In the 90s, EDPM roofing was a popular choice in this region. EPDM roofing comprises a synthetic rubber membrane that is durable and can last up to 50 years if maintained properly. EPDM is also fire-resistance and is available in many different styles. While this material is durable, it consists of only one layer, which is relatively thin, which means this roof system may be more vulnerable to certain damage compared to other commercial flat roofing materials.
Ballasted
Decades ago, ballasted roofing was popular. The membrane of this roofing system is not anchored to the decking material. Instead, it is ballasted with gravel. The gravel used for this roofing is bigger than typical gravel and is applied in a thick layer, allowing it to hold up during heavy winds. Ballasted roofing installation is quick and easy; however, this roofing can be heavy, and the gravel tends to trap a lot of dirt. There also is always the chance of the gravel being blown off the roof, even though it can withstand it most of the time. If you have a ballasted roof, SPG Roofing & Exteriors can consult on replacing it.
Hot mop
Hot mop roofing is a multi-layered, impermeable covering that can be applied to an existing roof. Commercial roofs are typically maintained and not replaced, which leads to there sometimes being multiple layers of roofing on top of each other. This can occur with many commercial flat roof types and can be a big problem and liability long term. If this is the case for your roof, SPG Roofing & Exteriors can address it before it becomes a major issue.
TPO
Thermoplastic polyolefin, better known as TPO roofing, is a lightweight material with great performance. TPO technology is more than 20 years old, is tried and tested, and is a go-to for many commercial roofing projects. The rubber roofing is an inexpensive low-slope option that lasts around 25 years when properly installed by our team.
