What Are Asphalt Shingles?
Asphalt shingles are one of the most common types of roofing you find on homes today. This roofing system is made from asphalt shingles or other asphalt roofing components, which are just as important as the singles themselves. The other components consist of roof decking and flashing, underlayment, ridge capping, roof vents, along a few other materials that ensure your home stays protected.
Asphalt roofing’s lifespan can vary depending on the type of asphalt shingle your roof comprises. An asphalt shingle roof can last anywhere between 25 and 50 years under the right conditions. Proper roof maintenance is typically required to keep your roof lasting as long as possible. SPG Roofing & Exteriors provides asphalt shingle roof repairs when needed. Property installation will also extend the life of your roof to the longest it can last.
Types of Asphalt Shingles
While you may know what asphalt shingles are and look like, we may not realize that there are a few different types to choose from. Owens Corning categorizes the types in three categories based on shingle line: architectural, slate look, and three-tab style.
Each style offers algae resistance protection which discourages algae from growing outside your roof. This protection was developed to meet the needs of all climates, including that of Indiana. Owens Corning shingles also offer wind resistance, so you don’t have to worry about shingles blowing off the roof. The shingles prevent allowing space for leaks and other possible interior damage. In addition, all styles can support solar panel installation.

Architectural Style Shingles
The architectural style is the more popular choice for clients. There are four architectural style options. The first is Duration, which offers dimension and dramatic color contrast to your roof, with exceptional performance. The second option is Duration Designer, which offers bright and bold colors for eye-catching curb appeal and high performance.
The third option for Owens Corning architectural styles asphalt shingles is Duration Flex, offering SBS polymer modified shingles that meet the highest possible impact rating, allowing maximum protection of your home. The fourth option is Oakridge which is considered a step up from three-tab shingles, offering impressive beauty and long-lasting performance.

Slate Look Style Shingles
There is only one option for the slate look shingle style. This option is called Berkshire and has a similar style to architectural, resembling natural slate and featuring large tabs with unique shadow lines for added dimension. While fewer color options, Berkshire shingles offer an elegant and timeless look with a natural slate.
Our Process
SPG Roofing & Exteriors is a preferred installer and contractor of Owens Corning. This status allows our customers to access warranties backed by Owens Corning, providing long-lasting protection and quality.
Our asphalt shingle installation process begins with a drone or physical inspection of your property. We catalog an inspection report via Company Cam during the inspection and provide that report to you. Our drone technology is installed with patented damage detection AI to ensure that hail and wind damage to storm-damaged homes are accurately inspected and reported.
After the exterior inspection, we provide you with a digital report of our inspection. We believe in keeping our clients up to date with everything going on with their roof. From there, we establish a plan of action, whether that means the repair of certain shingles or a roof replacement.
Regardless of the need for a replacement, one of our project managers will meet you to create a more accurate project plan and vision after the project progresses to production. This meeting allows you time to ask questions and get answers face to face. We pride ourselves on our customer service, so if you have any questions or concerns at any point, you can contact us to address or answer them.
SPG Roofing & Exteriors utilizes the CatchAll protection system during the installation or repair, which helps us protect your home during the demo process. You may not be thinking about the tons of weight and thousands of nails that are removed during a roof replacement, but we are, and we want to protect your home from any possible damage.
Our process will finish with a professionally and properly installed asphalt shingle roof. We strive to curate a trusting relationship with each of our clients. We want to walk away from our job well done, leaving you with full confidence in your roof and us to provide you with all your future roofing and exterior needs.
