Is James Hardie fiber cement worth the extra cost over vinyl?

For many homeowners, yes. Fiber cement handles impact and hail better than vinyl, resists fire, and takes paint, so you can change the color later. It costs more because the material costs more and the install takes longer. Vinyl is the better fit when the budget is tight and you want no painting.

What's the difference between LP SmartSide and James Hardie?

LP SmartSide is engineered wood and James Hardie is fiber cement. LP is lighter and usually costs a little less. Hardie is more fire resistant and is less affected by moisture. LP carries a 5/50-year limited warranty and Hardie a 30-year limited product warranty.

How long does siding last?

Vinyl and fiber cement both last for decades when they're installed well. Engineered wood lasts a long time too if it's kept painted. How long yours lasts depends on the installation, the weather barrier behind it, and upkeep.

Can damaged siding be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. A few cracked or loose boards can be replaced. The catch is matching: faded vinyl and discontinued colors can be hard to match, so on older siding it's sometimes better to redo a whole wall.

Will homeowners insurance pay for hail damage to siding?

If a storm damaged your siding, your homeowner's policy may cover it, minus your deductible. We document the damage with photos and meet your adjuster at the house. Indiana law doesn't let a contractor pay any part of your deductible. If you want help negotiating the claim, we can refer you to a licensed public adjuster.

Do you replace soffit, fascia and trim with the siding?

We can. Many siding jobs replace soffit, fascia and window and door trim at the same time, and the estimate lists those separately so you can see what each adds.

Premium Material

James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement is made from cement, sand and wood fibers. It doesn't melt, dent easily or feed insects, it resists fire, and it holds paint well. It costs more than vinyl because the boards are heavy and take longer to cut and hang. James Hardie siding carries a 30-year limited product warranty.

Hardie's warranty depends on the boards being installed to its instructions: clearances at the roof, ground and trim, flashing at windows and doors, and the right fasteners and spacing. As a James Hardie-certified contractor, we install to those instructions. We install HardiePlank lap siding, HardiePanel vertical siding (including board and batten), shingle siding for gables, and HardieTrim boards.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl is the least expensive siding to install and needs no paint, since the color runs through the panel. It's light and fast to hang. It can crack in a hard freeze or from hail, and faded panels can be hard to match on a repair. Insulated vinyl, with foam backing, adds some stiffness and insulation.

A vinyl job lasts as long as the details are right: room for the panels to expand and contract, flashing at windows and doors, and a sound weather barrier behind the siding.

LP SmartSide Engineered Wood Siding

LP SmartSide is engineered wood: wood strands bonded with resin and treated against rot and insects. It's lighter than fiber cement, looks like wood, and usually costs between vinyl and fiber cement. Siding Repair & Replacement

Not every siding problem needs a whole new house of siding. A few cracked or loose boards, a failed joint, or one damaged wall can often be repaired. Matching faded vinyl is the hard part, and on older siding it's sometimes better to redo a whole wall. Our siding repair page covers that side.

On a replacement, we remove and haul away the old siding, replace soft or rotted sheathing we find underneath, install new house wrap and flashing, and hang the new siding. If a storm caused the damage, we document it with photos and meet your insurance adjuster on site.
