Hail damage is easy to miss from the ground and easy to find on the roof. SPG Roofing & Exteriors inspects roofs, siding and gutters for hail damage across Central Indiana, photographs what we find, and meets your insurance adjuster on site. Hail Damage Roof Inspection
A hail inspection covers every slope of the roof, not just the side you can see. On asphalt shingles we look for:
- Dark spots where hail knocked the granules off.
- Soft spots, or bruises, where the shingle mat is fractured under the surface.
- Cracked or broken shingles and damaged ridge caps.
- Dents in metal vents, flashing, gutters and downspouts, which show how big the hail was and which way it came from.
Insurance adjusters usually look for a pattern of hits across each slope, so we mark and photograph the damage slope by slope and measure the roof. You get the photos whether or not you hire us.
Hail Damage Roof Repair or Replacement
Whether hail damage can be repaired depends on how much of the roof was hit and how old it is. A few damaged shingles on one slope can usually be replaced. Hail bruising spread across several slopes usually means a full replacement, because patched shingles next to bruised ones will keep failing. Older shingles can also be hard to match.
Hail damage does not always leak right away. Lost granules and bruised shingles wear out faster, so a roof that looks fine after a storm can start leaking a season or two later. Hail Damage Siding Repair
Hail cracks and punches holes in vinyl siding, especially on the side of the house that faced the storm, and it can chip and dent fiber cement and aluminum. We check every wall, along with window wraps, trim, soffit and fascia, and photograph the damage with the roof so it can all be handled in one claim and one project.

How Big Does Hail Have to Be to Damage a Roof?
The National Weather Service treats hail 1 inch across or larger (about the size of a quarter) as severe. Hail that size and up commonly damages asphalt shingles, but smaller hail can still dent gutters and vents, crack older vinyl siding, and damage roofs that are already worn. Wind matters too, because wind-driven hail hits harder and at an angle.
A quick check: if hail left dents in gutters, downspouts, AC units or a car parked outside, have the roof inspected.
Hail Damage and Your Insurance Claim
Most of our hail work goes through homeowners' insurance. You file the claim with your insurer. We provide the photos and measurements and meet your adjuster on site to show what we found. If you want someone to negotiate the claim for you, we can refer you to a licensed public adjuster. Once the claim is approved, we schedule the repair or replacement.
