Wind can become a threat with any storm that passes through the state of Indiana. High speed winds can have the power to knock down trees, telephone poles, and roofs on houses. Indiana is susceptible to floods, thunderstorms, snowstorms, tornadoes, and droughts. Each of these weather occurrences can bring high winds with them. Tornadoes alone have had winds recorded at 300 miles per hour. If your roof is not prepared for winds of any caliber, it could be vulnerable to wind damage. Even if your roof is prepared, it could still experience some damage caused by wind.

There have been winds reported in Indiana that have reached a speed of about 65 miles per hour. These high speed winds can cause some major and minor damage to your roof, and sometimes wind damage is not something you notice until the damage has become too severe. If you’ve recently experienced a storm with high winds, contact SPG Roofing & Exteriors today to schedule your complimentary drone-powered inspection.

Common Types of Wind Damage

Being a roofing company in Indiana means we’ve seen a lot of different types of roof damage from wind. Here are some of the most common to be aware of:

  • Shingles lifting: The sealant between the underlayment and the shingles can detach due to high-speed winds. If this occurs, the shingles can lift, which can cause leakage by allowing water to seep into the underlayment.
  • Shingles curling: Curling shingles are a problem; regardless of it they are curling downwards or upwards. If your shingles begin curling, water can seep into the underlayment, which can cause leakage.
  • Shingles missing: High Speed winds can easily rip shingles off a roof.
  • Damage to the soffit and fascia: The soffit is the part of your roof where the overhang meets your house’s siding. The fascia is the board located along the side of the overhang, which makes the roofing more attractive. High speed winds can cause these pieces to become compromised, leading to water leakage and possible interior damage.

What To Look For

Since you are now aware of some of the most common types of wind damage, you need to know what to look for. Unless you’re scheduling regular roof inspections, you may not be aware of wind damage until it becomes glaringly obvious, which can be detrimental by that point. Here are some signs that you would see that could indicate wind damage:

Missing shingles

Shingles missing is a common type of damage, and it’s also relatively obvious to spot. You’ll be able to see when a shingle is missing.

Granule loss

Granule loss from wind can be obvious because it will typically look like horizontal lines. The horizontal lines indicate that the shingle seal has broken.

Leaking

Water leaking is a pretty obvious sign of an issue. If your roof begins to leak, there could be some major damage to your roof.

If you’ve discovered any of these signs of distress or recently experienced a windstorm, contact SPG Roofing & Exteriors today to assess your roof.
